War-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], "Warsaw Sound, Geo., On Board of the Steamer Cosmopolitan, Jan. 31, [62]", in part: "…I am here on board of the "Steamer Cosmopolitan"…in the state of Georgia. Have been aboard two weeks. We started from Hilton Head twenty first of Jan'y. and came aboard of this boat…there is three gunboats with us. Three regiments including ours are in this Expedition…Gen. [Thomas W.] Sherman and [Horatio] Wright is with us, also Comodore Dupont. There is about eight hundred soldiers on board our boat…this Expedition was fitted out for Savannah. The gunboats are to silence the batteries and we are to land…on this boat we have a pretty tough time of it as we have not had enough to eat. There was tow or three days we suffered of hunger…they scraped the deck one day this week and got five bushels of dirt. The place where I lay…was just like a hog pen…hog have better nests than we do…two boys in our regiment got to scuffling-one threw the other against a box and broke his ankle and another got his ankle out of joint…".
