A good war-date Union surgeon's letter, 1p. 4to., written by Surgeon Jedediah Hyde Baxter (12th Mass. Vol. as brigade surgeon (1837-1890) after the war Surgeon General of the United States Army with the rank of brigadier general), Frederick, Md., June 19, 1862, reading, in part: "I hereby certify that Lieutenant E. J. Bently [3rd Wisconsin Vols.] is still unfit for duty…of an injury to his back received May 29th at the battle of Winchester…". From the personal archive of Brig. Gen. Thomas Ruger. VG.
