War-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Everett W. Miner, Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., St. Helena, S. C., Feb. 13, 1864, in part: "…we have not heard a thing from the expedition only that they landed at Jacksonville and had pushed on for the interior…Col. Hawley who commands our brigade & is Col. of the 7th C. V. [sent a letter] stating that they should order on what men there is left behind…as soon as they could get transportation…all the steamers are busy carrying down commissary stores. He wrote that the 7th Conn. were at Jacksonville and that our Reg were at Lake City…with the 40th Mass. and that they had captured nearly horses enough to mount a Reg and probably the 7th N. H…the 40th were mounted before they left Hilton Head. He did not state that nay body was killed or wounded and…would if there had been. The Schr Springbok left for Jacksonville last night and Charley went with it so I am left alone with what goods there is here to wait until the camp goes…there was about 25 prisoners brought up that our folks had captured. Lake City is about 80 miles from St. Augustine & was Genl. Finnegan's head quarters. He commanded all the Rebel troops in Florida. Our folks had a pretty good march from Jacksonville to there it is over a hundred miles…the 85th Penna Vol has been sent over from Hilton Head to do picket duty. The 4th have been ordered from Morris Island to Beaufort. They went up by sea last night…". Also included is the original patriotic transmittal cover addressed to Everett's mother. VG.
