The Flag of Our Union (est.1846) was a weekly story paper published in Boston, Massachusetts, in the mid-19th century. In addition to news it featured works of fiction and poetry including contributions from notable writers such as Louisa May Alcott and Edgar Allan Poe. This group of 11 issues (1847-1848) represents two of the beautiful mastheads. The [6] 1847 issues show General George Washington, after the painting “Washington at Dorchester Heights” by Stuart. Then, each of the state names are set within the lettering of the masthead. The next [5] 1848 issues show Washington on horseback after “Genl. George Washington. The Father of His Country,” Hartford: Kellogg & Comstock, New York. Four of the issues have serialization of “The Black Avenger” by Ned Buntline. these issues have been disbound and are rough at the spine.
