Partially printed documents, to include: Two cryptic telegrams on imprinted Southern Telegraph Companies forms, each one page, 8 ¼" x 4", November 8 and November 9, 1864, from Jefferson Davis, Richmond, Virginia to "Genl. E. G. Lee," Staunton, Virginia. The first states that "For the particular object contemplated the route proposed etc. would require too much time. 'S' gone by direct line for other purposes. You could no doubt render good services, & if your health permits I would approve." The second message simply says "It will be well if you come & confer in person." Very good condition…Plus; a third document, "Special Orders No. 282" from the Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Richmond, November 28,1864, one page, 4to, grants Edwin Lee medical leave for six months. A manuscript note on silk is tipped to the back, presumably in Lee's hand, and reads, "furlough & med. Certificate Given to avert suspicion of my real business in Canada." Old repaired splits, browning. Good condition. Lee indeed went to Canada with his wife, engaged in espionage on behalf of the Confederacy and returned home to Virginia in 1866.
