TRENHOLM, William L. a Confederate Army veteran, was the first Democrat and first Southerner to be appointed Comptroller. Placed in office by President Cleveland, he was known for the large number of changes he recommended in the banking laws. Document Signed, “W.L. Trenholm” 1p. folio, January 1, 1868, being a bond that reads in part: “We, Theodore D. Wagner and William L. Trenholm, of Charleston, in the State of South Carolina, Merchants, are held and firmly bound unto James Robb and Charles T. Lowndes, Trustees, under an agreement made between us...and certain creditors of said Copartnerships...” Fine.
