A nice war-date Union home front letter, 8pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery written by Annie Give, daughter of John W. Given 63rd Penn. Vols., Sharpsburg, Pa., June 5, 1862, in small part: "…news came that there was a battle, that McClellan's army was all cut up and that Col. [Samuel W.] Black [62nd Penn.] was killed [he was killed at Gaines Mill, Va., 6/27/62]. Our distressed could not be pictured…but alas, Richmond is not yet ours…O' the thousands of mourning families. No wonder we weep…preparations were being made to have a picnic…but this news has quenched that desire. The 9th & 11th [regts.] in which are the Saltsburgh boys was engaged and…one expects to hear of friends dead, dying or wounded…the ladies are passing my window returning from a meeting to form themselves into a society to make lent and bandages…it is reported now that White House is burn. May the God of battles bless our poor soldiers and preserve my darling father…Aunt F has just returned from meeting says, 'tell your Pa. [We] will do all we can for them poor fellows. I just gave her two old handkerchiefs…". VG
