A good group of war-date three (3) letters and various pension related documents spanning between 1881 and 1920 related to the military career of 1st Sergeant David Wray, Co. K, 19th Kentucky Vols. The war tore families and neighbors apart in Kentucky more so than any other loyal state in the Union at that time, but when her sons joined to fight together. A bond formed that could hardly be broken. Wray's letters, read, in part: "…[Claiborne Co., Tenn., July 15, 1862, on patriotic stationery]…we drawer our money yesterday. I drew $34. I would like to send about $50 home, if not more I have to keep it in my pocket and I am afraid…I will loose it…the way they pay us off is to keep us two months in their debt…let me know something about Thom Humble and his mother. Tell him that he must not let his brother turn him a tory…give…my respects…to the old Col. tell him he must wright to me and let me know what them traitors is doing in that country. I would rather here his opinion…than anyone else…we made up $20 in our company for the man that got his arms shot of by the cannon…I wish you was out here to see the [Cumberland] Gap…[Hardensville, Ind., Oct. 8, 1864]…I am 27 miles from New Albany…camp is a bad place to wright. I will not write any more until I get to my place of destination…[Louisville, Kentucky, Jan. 19, 1865]…Thom Huffman…said I need not have any fears about coming home…I never was afraid…I never expect to be for…if I cant come by myself I have plenty of friends that will come with me. We will be mustered out tomorrow…". Minor tape repairs and expected wear
