A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, Camp Griffin, Fairfax Co., Va., Feb. 28, 1862, in part: "…this is how are sick now reads, in Gen. Hospital 18, in Regt Hosp. 24, in quarters 26=68. All of the men in our hospital are able to sit up…I went to the city on the 20th [and on] the 22nd the brigade was called together and Washington's Farewell Address was read to them. The 5th Regt had fine time that day and plenty of sports with foot races, sack races, climbing a greased pole etc…the 26th we had orders to get everything ready for a three days march…I worked all day on our Hosp. knapsacks and our medicine chest…we sent off all our suplus stuff to the city with the Dr.s trunks. Dr. Janes [commander of Camp Letterman, Gettysburg] told me…that we were to go up and help Banks cross the Potomac. Lawin went down with the chests and…he said that the Sec. of War sent word to the House that Banks had crossed the river and that six men were drowned. Gen. McClellan and staff are there…Banks crossed but…the papers are not allowed to publish it. I saw an item saying that 6 men from Banks Division were drowned by the overturning of a boat…each man is to carry all his goods on his back…we are to have one ambulance…the Gov. has written to the Sec. of War to have the Vt troops discharged soon as…it is paying them 70,000 dollars per month…many of the officers think we shall be at home by the 4th of July...". Near fine.
