Three Issues of Harper’s Weekly, all 1862, each 16pp., disbound, and each with important images of Balcks. To include; January 18, a 1/2 page front cover “Scene in the Parlor of Mr. Barnwell’s House at Beaufort, South Carolina.” With the fall of Beaufort, Robert Barnwell’s slaves took over the plantation. In 1861 Barnwell was a delegate to the Confederate States of America Provisional Congress held in Montgomery, Alabama. He represented South Carolina in the Confederate Senate from 1861 until 1865. ... plus, August 16th, a 1/4 page political cartoon shows a Black man offering a rope to a drowning white man, “A Consistent Negrophobist, ... Take that rope away you darned Nigger ...” ...plus, December 20th, with a 1/3 back page political cartoon shows a crowd of Blacks reading a biilboard with a caption, “Sensation among ‘Our Colored Brethren’ on ascertaining that the Grand Performance to which they had been invited on New Year's Day, was unavoidably postponed to the year 1900!” his cartoon was published after the Emancipation Proclamation was announced, but before it took effect. It criticizes Lincoln’s emancipation policies by poking fun at his previous advocacy of gradual emancipation and anticipating that he will turn the Emancipation Proclamation into a plan for (very) gradual emancipation.
