A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written on "Our Whole Country" patriotic stationery, by Pvt. Everett W. Miner, Co. C, 7th New Hampshire Vols., Camp Hale, Manchester, [N. H.], Dec. 11, 1861, in part: "…the officers all know when we are going for they are going…and Capt. George has gone to Concord to get their board money…the other night at roll call they took down the names of all of them that had not gone home on a furlough and are rushing them off as fast as they can…they will not give the men more than 24 hours notice before they go…so the men will not have any chance to runaway. It is not decided yet how I shall go. There is two drummers in this Co. and one…will have to go in the Fishersville Co[mpany]. The officers did not wish to decide which…should go, Pa [42 year-old Leonard N. Miner] or the Parker boy [18 year-old Edwin V. Parker]. They wanted…the latter to go…but did not want to hurt his feelings. Well, he said he would go, but the other day he says he did not want to go & would rather take the gun than leave the Co. Father told Mr. Wing the Drum Major that if Capt. [Jeremiah S.] Durgin of the Fishersville Co. would take me he would go and he said he would take me for one of his Lieuts…". Near fine
