Manuscript copy of announcement, "Official General Johnston Surrendered to General Sherman," one page, 4to, on tissue, War Department, Washington, D.C., April 28, 1865, reading: "Maj. General Dix, A dispatch from General Grant dated Raleigh, 10 PM. April 26th, Just received by this department states: that Johnston (and) the forces in his command (have surrendered) embracing all from here to Chattahoochie, to General Sherman in the basis agreed upon between Lee and myself for the Army of Northern Virginia. Edwin M. Stanton Sec. of War." Good condition…plus: a war-date note, unknown author, one page, oblong 8vo, reading "belonging to the army of the Cumberland Major Gen Tomas cmndg - an moving in conjunction with the armies of Tenn & Ohio commanded respectively by Major Gens McPherson and Schofield the three armies under Major Gen W T Sherman"…plus; hand-carried cover to the Treasury Department. All very good condition.
