STEPHENS, Alexander (1812 -1883 ) Confederate vice-president, U.S. representative, governor; born near Crawfordville, Ga. He was admitted to the bar (1834) and served Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives (Whig, 1843--53; Dem., 1853--59), where he opposed the war with Mexico but strongly supported the Compromise of 1850. Autograph Sentiment Signed “To Adam L. Alexander with the kindest regards of Alexander H. Stephens Liberty Hall 21 May 1872, 1p. octavo, with printed bookplate “To Adam L. Alexander, The only survivor of my early benefactors, a gentleman distinguished for integrity, piety, urbanity, and high culture, in all that pertains to Art, Science, and Literature, this voluem is most respectfully and gratefully inscribed, with a fervent wish that his days may yet be continued for many years to come, in the enjoyment of that ‘otium cum dignitate’ which always imparts a hallowing charm to the crowning glory of a long, happy, prosperous, and well-spent life.
