Three folded Autograph Letters Signed, "J F H Claiborne," 4pp. total with integral address panels, 4to, Shieldsboro, Mississippi, June-July,1857, to T. Reavis, Gainesville, Alabama, reading, in part: (6/4/57) "Your letter of the 29th inst., after going to New Orleans, found me here too sick to think or write. My complaint…is now receding, and in a few days I shall be able to answer yours in detail…(6/18/57)…My expectations upon going to Louisiana have not been realized…I will be able to return…to raise a considerable sum, say five or six thousand dollars…which shall be placed at your disposal…(7/5/57)…I rec'd your duplicate letters & answered them…The substance of my letter was to invite you, at some time convenient to you…a personal conference when we can, no doubt, make satisfactory arrangements…" John Francis Hamtranck Claiborne (1807-1884) was a Mississippi native devoted to his state, past and present. Though an effective journalist, he is best known for his pioneer works presenting Mississippi history. Stains to the letter, bold signature, overall good condition.
