Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Sergeant James P. Thompson, Colt's Co. of Light Artillery, South Carolina Volunteers, 3pp., 8vo, Pig Point, Virginia, December 7, 1861, to father, brother A. W. Thompson and sister Nancy Thompson in Arkansas, reading, in part: "…at Pig Point Va. in site of the mouth of James River A cross James River is a crew of Yankees they have possession of New Port News I am in five mile of the enemy…I can see 2 large war vessels across the river Cast my eye down the river & see 32 war vessels blockading the mouth of James River Old McGruder has got the Yankees surrounded…I hear the yankee drum at this time across the river I hear the cannon roaring across the river Old Mc Gruder is giving the Enemy ball & grape shot…" The writer might be one and the same as Lt. James P. Thompson, Co. "C," Chesterfield (SC) Light Artillery. Minor marginal loss, else very good condition.
