A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Emmons Snyder, Co. D, 4th New York Heavy Artillery, Mowers, USA Gen. Hospital, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, March 16, 1865 to Eva Knapp, in part: "…since I last wrote you death has entered our family circle & taken a Beloved Brother. For the first time in our lives we have, as a family, been called…to mourn for one that was near & dear. He died for our country, fighting for the wright. He now sleeps in the church yard at home which is a great comfort to us all. It is hard to part with one so dear but God['s] ways are all for the best & we must try to think so, yet it does not seem wright…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog. Near fine.
