JONES, Samuel (1820 - 1887) Confederate major general who served as Beauregard's Chief of Artillery at Bull Run, later he succeeded Beauregard to command the Department of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida. Rare A.L.S. 4pp. 8vo., Baltimore, Nov. 20, 1875 to Col. Charles C. Jones. Fine content letter concerning Confederate Gen. Robert S. Garnett, the first Confederate general to die in the war, in part: "…When his command was organized, and when he was killed, I was so engrossed with my duties at Manassas that I could know little of other commands…you may obtain information on the subject from his father-in-law, Geo. S. Nelson…[he] can probably show you a magazine, published in Richmond during the war, which contained some notice of Garnett and his command…Garnett was a class mate and personal friend of mine, and I am sure that the South lost one of its most gallant and accomplished officers when he died…I shall be very glad to receive your narrative of the Siege of Savannah…during genl. Sherman's march from Atlanta to the coast…Nearly all my papers were destroyed or fell into the hands of the enemy after the surrender…". Mounting remnants at extreme blank left margin of first page, else very good.
