STEPHENS, Alexander (1812 -1883 ) Confederate vice-president, U.S. representative, governor; born near Crawfordville, Ga. He was admitted to the bar (1834) and served Georgia in the U.S. House of Representatives (Whig, 1843--53; Dem., 1853--59), where he opposed the war with Mexico but strongly supported the Compromise of 1850. Autograph Letter Signed, “Alexander H. Stephens” 1p. octavo, May 15, 1877, National Hotel, addressed to the Attorney General, and reads in part: “It affords me pleasure to say that Hon. J.C. Freeman of Ga. who is an applicant for U.S. Marshall for the Dist. of Ga. is a gentelman of integrity & character of my state and would fill with credit any position the Governement may tender him. This testimonial of Mr. Freeman’s character must be understood not to conflict with Col. O.P. Fitzsimmons whom I have earnestly indorsed for the same place...” VG.
