Manuscript document signed "S. G. French / Lt. Col & ch of ord / Army of Miss," one page with verso docketing, 4to, Jackson, April 1, 1861, titled "The State of Mississippi to H. H. Smyth, agent of Mississippi Penitentiary," a cash expenditure voucher showing $281.20 spent on 400 waist belts and 269 cartridge box belts. The signatory of this document, the State's Chief of Ordnance, would in time become a Major General French, a Division commander in the Army of Tennessee. Very good condition.
