Confederate officer's war-date letter by 2nd Lt. Delano W. Husted, "North Sumter Rifles," Co. "A," 5th Alabama Infantry, 3pp., 4to, "Camp near Richmond," June 13, 1864, to "John," n.p., reading, in part: "…The enemy are too close to justify me in saying that anything is reasonably certain in reference to my own, or the life and safety of anyone else. We may be attacked at any moment, or ordered to advance against them, and what the fate of a contest may be, no one can divine. We returned from picket duty last night…and are now sitting on the ground - some, like me, writing to loved one at home, some playing cards, some reading newspapers, and such books as can be obtained in camp, some chewing tobacco, and reflecting on the glorious past, the doleful present, and the dark and gloomy future…" Lt. Husted met his end some two weeks later on the battlefield at Gaines Mill, June 27, 1862. Browning along folds, very good condition.
