War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Camp Sherman, (Sherman's Division), Dec. 3, 1861, in part: "…they are doing considerable on this Island in…bringing on provisions, big guns, ammunition and building fort and embankments. There is 4 men detailed out of every Co. to work on the wharf every day…about this expedition…the sixth Conn. Vol. and the Seventh C. V. were the first to land after the taking of this island. But the "Stars and Stripes" are planted on South Carolina soil…we have buried two in our Reg. since we landed on this island and two in Washington…
