War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, "Near Savage Station, [Va.], June 20, 1862", in part: "…yesterday we shifted our quarters about 3 1/2 miles towards Richmond…the firing…was a brisk skirmish by which our men drove back the rebel pickets so as to dig another ditch…the roads are becoming dry & dusty…I never saw bad roads till I came into Virginia. I have had my feet drag in the mud when on the saddle mule…we have a contraband to cook for us…Prof. Lowe is just now taking a peep at Richmond, is in full view…4 miles north west of us & perhaps 2000 feet up. Balloon ascensions are very common here…". VG
