A sad and poignant war-date Union home front letter 4pp. 8vo., written by Cousin Horace, Portsmouth, [N. H.], Nov. 20, [64] to his cousin Eva Knapp, in part: "…cruel war has snatched a loved one form us another brave [boy] has laid his life upon the altar of his country. Yesterday we buried a brother, my cousin's husband…he was wounded at the battle of Hatcher's Run, Va., Oct. 27, and died at City Point, Va., Oct. 29. He had been but three weeks returned to duty having been wounded at the battle of the Wilderness …my cousin went to City Point and received his remains. She expected to see him alive when she started. On arriving at Fortress Monroe she learned of his death. She kept on to City Point and procured his remains and had them forwarded to Portsmouth for internment…". The original stamped transmittal cover is also included. From the Mix/Knapp family correspondence offered elsewhere in this catalog. Near fine
