LEE, Fitzhugh (1835-1905) Nephew of Robert E. Lee. An 1856 West Point graduate, he led Confederate cavalry in the Virginia theater during the Civil War. He was governor of Virginia (1886--90), U.S. consul general to Cuba (1896--98), and commanded the U.S. VII Corps in Cuba following the Spanish-American War (1899--1901). Autograph Letter Signed, “Fitzhugh Lee” 1p. quarto, Richland, Stafford Co., Virginia, December 7, 1880, addressed to General Marcus Wright in Washington D.C., and reads: “...I owe you an apology for the long delay in sending the enclosed paper. I have waited hoping to get the date of the commissions of those who served on my staff, but have been unable to do so. It fell to my lot to command the rear guard of Gen Lee’s Army from Richmond to Appomattox C.H. My Head Qrs wagons fell into the hands of the Federal troops & I lost all my papers &c. &c. So I have no date at hand...” Mountign strip at verso, minor spots of newspaper residue at open portion of letter, else VG.
