Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private R. C. Bridges, "University Grays," Co. "A," 11th Mississippi Infantry, 2pp., 4to, "Camp Fisher," Virginia, to his uncle, H. F. Bridges, Holmesville, Mississippi, reading, in part: "…My desire is that my negroes be left on the place with Mr. Alford. This seems to me to be best, but if you should think different I am willing to abode by your judgment in the case. I know you have had experience about such things and I have not…I request this much first. With the wish of the rest of the heirs, that there be an immediate division. Second, that Brother James Bridges fill the vacancy occasioned by the death of my mother if necessary (as one of the executors). Third, that the discharge you wish be granted if you consider it policy and if it can be done in my absence. Fourth, that my negroes remain on the Place with Mr. Alford and I obtain half the profits of the place as well as bear half the expenses…" Bridges, a college student, seems to have been the beneficiary of a parental death. He himself would not survive the war, dying on May 25, 1864 of wounds received at Staunton, Virginia earlier in the month. Some fading, very good condition.
