A very rare and colorful Civil War POW memorial issued to 1st Sergeant Alonzo Case 16th Connecticut Volunteers who was captured at Plymouth, N. C. April 20, 1864, being a partly-printed broadside lithograph, measuring 14 1/2" x 18 3/4" (sight), boldly entitled: "UNION EX-PRISONERS OF WAR, Connecticut Association," Hartford, Conn., Feb. 22, 1893, printed by Batch & Harris, Toledo, Ohio, reading, in part: "…this certifies, that Alonzo G. Case…enlisted in Company E of the Sixteenth Connecticut Inf. as First Sergeant…and was honorably discharged as First Lieut….was taken prisoner of war at or near Plymouth, N. C., April 20, 1864 and as confined in the following Southern Military Prisons: Macon, Charleston, Savannah, Columbia and was finally paroled on the first day of March 1865 at Wilmington, N. C…". Signed and made official by the Association's President John B. Clapp and Secretary Hiram Buckingham, both of the 16th Conn. who were also POWs at Plymouth, with Buckingham successfully escaping Andersonville! Not examined out of its original frame. Near fine.
