A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 3pp. 4to., signed "Willie" and W. L. J.", written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, "Camp near Harrison Landing, Va., July 12, 1862", in part: "…we are now camped in a large corn field about 2 miles back from the river and have thrown up earth works for guns. Our pickets do not see any thing of the rebels and it is reported that our cavalry scouts report that the enemy retired beyond White Oak Swamp…Old Abe was here to see us the other day…it was dark when he arrived where we were. The troops were all drawn up on the line of battle. We could hear him coming…before he reached us by the cheering that greeted his every step. I hope that he will see that we have men enough and that before England has time to meddle as…she will do when she hears of our late disaster…my views as to why McClellan fell back were correct…many officers say that Mc might have thrown the left of his army into Richmond but…it would have been impossible to hold it with Fort darling in the rear…it is reported that the 9th [Vermont] has started and that the 10th is being raised. Should not be sorry to have a few men I know of in St. J. drafted. Kennedy [Charles Kennedy is listed as a deserter on July 8, 1862] ran off the 1st day of July [during the battle Malvern Hill]…and has not been with the Regt since. He is the greatest coward I ever saw. It is reported that he is in the Provost Guard house. We have not heard…from Sherry yet and think he was killed or taken prisoner [John Wallace Sherry WIA & POW Savage Station, Va., June 29, 1862]…". VG 200-300 125. Dr. Henry Janes is Reported Killed in Action. A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, "Camp near Harrison Landing, Va., July 18, 1862", in part: "…it is said that you had not heard from me and feared that I had been taken prisoner…I hear that Mrs. Howard feels the loss of Eph. very much [Color Corporal E. Howard KIA Savage Station, Va., 6/29/62]…I see that Dr. Janes is dead in Va.[Dr. Henry Janes, commander Camp Letterman, Gettysburg.] His friends telegraphed out for his body. The Dr. said he should like to go home but did not like the mode of conveyance…it was reported at the landing that he was killed and someone that went off…to the Tribune…[reported]…his death…Sherry John Wallace Sherry WIA & POW Savage Station, Va., June 29, 1862] is still among the missing. We have not heard anything from our wounded that were taken prisoners…the band are expecting to go home soon…they are hard at work on the fortifications…". VG
