This 1858 Carte de Visite of Cyrus W. Field, has by "Brady, NY” scribed into the negative. Then, strangly it has been upside down remounted to Brady Washington mount. the image is also id’d on the reverse as credited to Culver Service. In 1854, Field began the quest to lay a telegraphic cable across the Atlantic Ocean. In August 1858, after several failed attempts, Field had arranged for Queen Victoria to send the first trans-Atlantic message to President James Buchanan. Although this feat was welcomed with great jubilation, unfortunately, the cable itself broke down three weeks later and was not reconnected until 1866.
