Document for hiring a substitute during the Civil War, which was a common practice if you had the money! The two official forms ( attached at the top of each form) allowed a substitute sailor to take the place of another who did not want to serve. The substitute, John Hoffman, was paid $300.00 as a bounty from the state of New York. The document is dated December 11, 1863. Where the substitute would sign his name on the second page there is an "X" and his name written in, so one can assume that he could not sign his name. A fine Union document.
