HOLTZCLAW, JAMES T. (1833 - 1893) Confederate brigadier general gravely wounded at Shiloh, served with distinction at Chaickamauga and at Atlanta, and with Hood in his invasion of Tennessee. Rare good content T.L.S. "J. T. Holtzclaw" on his legal letterhead, 3pp. 4to., Montgomery, Jan. 27, 1891 to Alabama Gov. Thos. G. Jones passionately urging his appointment to the state's railroad commission. Holtzclaw praises the governor for his non-favoritist approach to appointments, calls an adversary a "political wire worker of much cunning…given to self-magnification…his practical chicanery controlled the local politicians…" and cites the supportive letters written in his behalf by such names as McClellan, Forney, Wheeler, Armstrong, Dent, Lee, and many others. Near fine.
