Union soldier's war-date letter by "David" of Co. "I," 26th Massachusetts Infantry, 4pp., 8vo, Ship Island, Mississippi, December 9, 1861, to his sister, "Phebe," reading, in part: "I begin to realize what it is to be a soldier. We have had our ammunition given us and we have our guns loaded when on guard…Yesterday there was a sea fight between one of our gunboats & 2 or 3 rebels steamers…The(y) say there is 5000 rebels on the shore opposite…There is only 2400 men on this Island…We expect some more regiments soon & then probably we shall go on some expedition, perhaps to take New Orleans or Mobile…" Very good condition.
