Two war-date Union soldier's letters by Private Riel Blevein, Co. "E," 2nd Artillery, as follows: The first to his mother, 3pp. on patriotic embossed stationery, 8vo, reading, in part: "('Miners Hill,' Virginia, 10/17/61)…we are about 10 miles from Washington City still on the advance the enemy are falling back by degrees to say that we expect a fight daily would be an old story…In fact for two days past we have been throwing shell at the enemy but the distance is so great that we are unable to see with what affect our shells burst"…plus; the second to a brother in Warren County, Ohio, penned by a friend, 3pp. on patriotic embossed stationery, 8vo, with embossed Winfield Scott cover, reading, in part: "('Washington City,'11/17/61)…At the request of Mr. Riel Blevine (sic) I am seated to give you the mournful tidings of the sudden death of his brother 'James Blevine'…Last Saturday our battery was moved from Miners Hill Virginia to Washington he had been sick for several days before placed in the hospital near our camp…he died very easy and seemed almost to fall asleep..his untimely death is not without tears from his comrades…". Penned by a "Bg H. Lennon." Both letters are in very good condition.
