A good war-date Union home front letter, 8pp. 8vo., on patriotic stationery written by Annie Give, daughter of John W. Given 63rd Penn. Vols., Sharpsburg, Pa., June 5, 1862, in small part: "…'Fighting at Richmond' is the cry…the papers said the 63rd was in the hottest fire…a great many Pittsburghers have been killed. A partial list was given…we saw no familiar names…it is reported that from six to ten thousand rebels were captured yesterday near Richmond…I saw a Secession sword that Lieut. T. L. Maynard had obtained at Yorktown…the sword and other articles…brought thoughts of war into our heads…Corinth is evacuated. Ten thousand prisoners and fifteen thousand stand of arms have been taken by Genl. Pope…he overtook the retreating rebels…thousands are deserting Beauregard…Sallsburgh has suffered in wounded and missing. I was not aware that the 63rd was engaged until perhaps a week after the battle…I was shocked…who is Capt. of Co. B now? Ollie says Lieutenant somebody [Maynard] is at home…is poor John Williams prisoner and Powers killed?…I sat down to the pain this evening…I am proud that I am a soldier's daughter…"
