A good war-date Union Hospital Steward's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by William L. Jackson, 3rd Vermont, "Camp near Harrison Landing, Va., July 18, 1862", in part: "…it is said that you had not heard from me and feared that I had been taken prisoner…I hear that Mrs. Howard feels the loss of Eph. very much [Color Corporal E. Howard KIA Savage Station, Va., 6/29/62]…I see that Dr. Janes is dead in Va.[Dr. Henry Janes, commander Camp Letterman, Gettysburg.] His friends telegraphed out for his body. The Dr. said he should like to go home but did not like the mode of conveyance…it was reported at the landing that he was killed and someone that went off…to the Tribune…[reported]…his death…Sherry John Wallace Sherry WIA & POW Savage Station, Va., June 29, 1862] is still among the missing. We have not heard anything from our wounded that were taken prisoners…the band are expecting to go home soon…they are hard at work on the fortifications…".
