Soldier’s letter, 4pp., December 13, 1861, Camp Barry, Washington, D.C., by St. Clair Emerson, on McClellan patriotic letterhead, VG. Emerson mustered into NY 1st Light Artillery on 11/6/1861. In part, “You must excuse me for not writing before we leaft… Monday Night Dec. 2nd and arrived in Washington on the Friday morning following… On the day of our arrival Friday we were marched to the White House where we were introduced to Gov Seward and the President Abe Lincoln who made us a short speech after we were reviewed by some Genreal I forgot his name and by Major Doubelday of Auburn whoe said we were the finest company he ever saw…”
