Union officer's war-date letter by Adjutant General John S. Schultz, 2pp. on Head Quarters Department of the Susquehanna letterhead, with conforming hand-carried postal cover, 8vo, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, July 3, 1864, to George Besore, Waynesboro, Pennsylvania, reading: "There is every possibility of a raid - the rebels attacked our forces this A.M. four miles on Pikes from Martinsburg. Telegraph operator says quite a force of rebels are advancing but lacks confirmation. All persons in your neighborhood should be notified that measures may be adopted for the safety of their property, person(?) &c. Yours truly Jno. S. Schultz A.A.G. I send a circular here which should be circulated through your township." Actually, Chambersburg was in considerable danger and would be burned by Confederate troops on July 30, 1864. Fine condition.
