Two civilian letters by I.T. Eason, 6pp. total, 4to, Herbert, Mississippi, March & April 1861, to Judge T. Reavis, Gainesville, Alabama, reading, in part: (3/9/61)…I have now the best chance for making a good crop that I have ever had in my life, if I but had the provisions for my family and corn to feed my horse. You guessed very truly when you said the money I got from you was all gone, and I have not a great deal to show for it…I am forced to call on you again as the last chance on earth to keep my family from starving. If it was the will of Almighty God that we all could die tonight the very thought of it would be a comfort to me…a wife and seven helpless children to support and not provisions enough to last them two weeks…She (Mrs. Eason) is almost deranged - a mere skeleton…(4/9/61)…I rec'd a letter from your Merchants in Mobile, informing me that the articles had been sent according to your order…you have the sincere thanks & prayers of myself & family for your kindness…I hope and pray to God that you may never have occasion to form a bad opinion of your unfortunate old friend." One can only hope Eason succeeded in stabilizing his family situation as the nation teetered on the edge of civil war. Very good condition.
