Confederate soldier's war-date letter by James Kingston, possibly of Co. "G," 9th Texas Cavalry, 2pp., small 8vo, Point Lookout Military Prison, Point Lookout, Maryland, July 17, 1863, to his wife, n.p. Certain words and phrases in this letter are circled and, omitting all else, together read, "I hope to…I am trying to…yesterday more prisoners came…it may be only a little while now till…I…runaway…expect to go to Richmond…or…write you where…planting weapons under the oak tree…seven of us…I will expect you to remain at your father's place until I am free…" Penned on some very strange imprinted stationery with toy soldier graphics that look almost to be from the1930s, but are not. A James Kingston appears only on the muster rolls of the 9th Texas Cavalry. This regiment was active in the Vicksburg vicinity in 1863. Some of Grant's POWs from that campaign wound up in Point Lookout, so it is conceivable the author of this letter is the listed Texas trooper. Light stains, large split along the central fold.
