A pair of 1862 issues of Harper’s Weekly with political cartoons, July 12 and July 26, each complete 16pp., issue, disbound, VG. Each issue has a back page cartoon regarding Butler’s Women order. The issue July 12th shows a before/after two panel cartoon, [first panel] “The Ladies of New Orleans before General Butler’s Proclamation” shows the ladies spitting in the eye of a Union soldier. [second panel] “After General Butler’s proclamation,” shows the ladies slightly smiling at the Union soldier....plus, July 26th issue also shows a back page cartoon, this one illustrating England’s indignation over Butler’s General Order #28, “Virtuous Indignation of John Bull at the Horrors of the War for the Union.Butler issued an order to the effect that any woman insulting or showing contempt for any officer or soldier of the United States should be treated as a woman of the town plying her avocation.
