A pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, totaling 7 1/2pp. 8vo., written by 42 year old Pvt. George L. Troutt, Co. G, 47th New York Vols., to his commander Captain Charles Moore, reading, in part: [Hospital Steamer Monitor, Bermuda Hundred, Va., June 29, 1864]…I was detailed by a general order before we left Gloucester Point by Dr. Smith to act as nurse on this boat…Dr. Smith took charge of the George Leary a hospital steamer. The doctor took what help he wanted from this steamer and left me …among strangers. Dr. Lewis is in charge of this hospital steamer at present…he appointed me acting steward and ward master…one of Compy G boys came aboard at Broadway Landing on the Appomattox…and told me you had charge of the Regt…I would like to know if there is any letters for me…forward them to me on board the Monitor…inform me if I am entitled to go home with the Regt when their time is out…my duty is very heavy for me. My affliction is such that I can hardly stand…I do not want to die here. I would like to see my family…do not think I am playing the dead beat…I am suffering for rest. As my Capt. I depend, I depend on you to alleviate my position…[Hospital Steamer, Monitor, July 11]…I am here still and I have not received any word from you…I can not leave this place without an order…Major Eddy said that the Regt was going home on the 7th of Aug…I am very weak. My hand trembles…Dr. Smith is on board the George Leary carry[ing] wounded to P. Y. [Penn.] Charles Gross was the cause of it all because I would not submit drunkenness, imprudence…all I was left for was spite. D. Lewis the surgeon of this boat put me in charge of this boat…and here I am very sick…I feel as if I would like to see my wife and little children once more, god bless them if I never see them again…". A bit pathetic, but he did get his wish on November 26, 1864 when the 47th mustered out and went home. Both near fine.
