Manuscript Document Signed, being a request for Leave of Absence by Lt. Walter Thorn, 116th U.S. Colored troops, May 1866, Brownsville, Texas. Thorn was awarded the Medal of Honor as 1st Lt. of the 116th, for action at Dutch Gap Canal, Virginia, January 1, 1865, when after a fuse to mine bulkhead had been lit, he mounted the bulkhead and warned the guard of its danger. This document contains an Autograph Note Signed by “Geo. W. Getty” Brvt. Major General, which reads “Respctfully forwarded not approved. The services of this Officer cannot be spared at this time.” with Signed Endorsement on verso by Daniel D. Wheeler, who while with the 4th Vermont was awarded the Medal of Honor at Salem Heights, for “Distinguished bravery in action where he was wounded and had a horse shot from under him.” Document is about VG.
