Letter written and signed by “W.G. Atkinson, Acting 1st Lieut. of Engineers,” 1pp., Camp Pickens, July 3, 1861, to General Beauregard, VG. In part, “I send the map of our ‘Camp Pickens’ made from transit surveys I conducted. ... Major Williamson at his room has two colored maps of “Alex., Loudoun, & Hamp. R.R.” I send you a map of country around Alexandria, scale 1 mile equals 1 inch, perfected as I best could from various data, and it is sent now in a sectional part. The whole sheet extends to above Leesburg. ...” Camp Pickens was the Confederacy’s largest encampments in northern Virginia.
