War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, "3d Brigade Head Quarters, [Va.], June 29, 1862", in part: "…the 37th New York Regt, while on picket…caught a party of Rebels at a dance some distance beyond our lines through information given by a negro. A skirmish resulted in the loss of one Union solider & ten killed & two prisoners of the Rebels. The prisoners were brot in this morning minus coats or hats…an old man was furnished [a] coat & hat by our brigadier Genl. Jamison & the other said to be the fiddler of the evening was furnished a cap by some one else & then they were escorted to Washington by Walkers line…".
