Newspaper, bound volume of 17 weekly issues of “Brother Jonathan,” New York, September 2, 1842 through December 23, 1843. Each issue is 28pp., 8” x 11.” Brother Jonathan was a weekly publication operated by Benjamin Day from 1842 to 1862, and was the first weekly illustrated publication in the United States [although these issue have only illustrated mastheads]. The name of the publication was a reference to Brother Jonathan, a common cultural reference to a fictional character personifying the entire United States, similar to Uncle Sam. The issues are filled literary content, small news reports, stock reports, as well as turf results. Included are five installments of Charles Dickens’ novel “Martin Chuzzlewit.” Several important news reports, one such is, “Profeesor Morse’s Electro-Magnetic Telegram,” reports on Morse’s Baltimore-Washington telegraph system and successful experiments. One page has ad clipped, a couple have edge tears, boards are present but loose, the interior is VG.
