Confederate soldier's war-date letter by Private John K. Clayton, Co. "C," 39th Alabama Infantry, Shelbyville, Tennessee, June 13, 1863, 4pp., 8vo, to his mother, reading, in part, "…I am Eight Miles above Shelbyville throwing up Breast Works and Cutting Down the timber…the men out of the 39 Ala Regt are Doing the Cutting…we are Expecting an attack here soon by the Yankees…this timber is cut down to keep the yankees from charging our fortifications & so as we can see them a long ways off. our men are looking for a fight here soon…there was a man Shot in Shelbyville on the 10 inst for Deserting his Regt there was one shot at wartrace on the 10…they are Done with this War…I can get as much for 5 cts in silver as I can get for $100 in Confederate Bills, Confederate money wont hardly pass…" Split along first page fold, else good condition.
