A complete issue of Harper’s Weekly, February 14, 1863, 16pp., disbound, good. the issue is replete with war news and engravings, yet on the back page is a two panel political cartoon titled “Jim Crow Jumping About So.” Below panel one, "On to Richmond! The Rebel Congress must not be allowed to meet there in July." - (See N. Y. Tribune, May and June, 1861.); Below panel two, "Let us bow to our destiny, and make the best allowable peace." (See N. Y. Tribune, Jan., 1863.) Horace Greeley, the editor of the Tribune, is dressed in a Jim Crow outfit giving the news. In 1861, he originated the "On to Richmond" battle cry to force action in the eastern theater. In early 1863, after the Union defeats at Manassas, the Peninsula, and recently at Fredericksburg, Greeley changes his stance. He gives up the "On to Richmond" cry in favor of a more solemn stance of peace. He believed the Union could not win the war and should work for peace. It is an attack on the now sober Greeley's turn to peace.
