Lead-filled stamped brass with iron hooks, 54 x 84mm. Such plates were first affixed to cartridge box flaps in 1839. By the last quarter of the 19th century the familiar oval US was simply embossed on the leather. This specimen is as excavated with a glossy olive patina having earthen highlights. Dings to the face with some lead loss to the back. Good condition.
