War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. John Wesley Given (1816-1870) of Sharpsburg, PA who served as a private and wagoner in the 63rd Pennsylvania Infantry, "Harrison Landing [Va.], Aug. 13, 1862", in part: "…wee are now expecting to move hourly [and] have been under marching orders for 3 days…most likely [we] will leave the Peninsula…our wagons have been loaded since yesterday…& may…join Genl. Pope…I lost everything on our skedaddle…I gave my watch to Sergt. Young for safe keeping. He having a good horse while I was encumbered with a mule team…the Brigade Wagon Master & me mess together…I threw my body lice into the Chickahominy, have none since…this…soap plate is from Wm. & Mary College…after a long & hard march…were very busy all day…shipping our troops on steam boats. Our trains & loose horses are all here…awaiting transportation…the corn fields on our route suffered heavily…".
