Manuscript book by Sergeant Colin V. G. Forbes, Co. "G," 5th New York Infantry, "Duryea's Zouaves," approximately 50pp., 6 1/4" x 3", full calf covers, the front having a tipped-in sticker reading: "Written and carried by self in Civil war - from Bull run 2d - Contents taken from morning report Book - complete in every way," Sergeant Forbes lists the men of his company, followed by reductions through casualties or desertion. The diary proper records considerable action, noting the regiment's horrific losses at 2nd Bull Run with "August 30th, '62 - At daybreak to Manassas Plains. Formed line of battle and took part in the battle. Our loss is about severe. Minutes after the engagements commenced was 123 killed and198 wounded. Took position behind breastworks at Centerville and sent out flag of truce to look after our wounded." Forbes would survive the carnage to muster out of the service on May 14, 1863. Front cover disbound, else good condition.
