Rare CDV of author Mark Twain (Samuel Clemens) and stage actor John T. Raymond, Rockford, NY front and back imprints, ca. 1870. The image apparently represents an attempt at reconciliation between Clemens and Raymond over their dispute about the rewriting of the play The Gilded Age. When first written and offered to Raymond, the actor refused to play the part without extensive rewrites. Clemens refused, but the two later reconciled. Image shows the two shaking hands, although their facial expressions give no hint of friendliness. Of the few examples of the image we know of, this is the first example we have encountered in a CDV format. In excellent condition.
